VENICE VENI, VIDI, WHICH WAY?
VENICE, Italy - Tall and blond, the young couple walks across St. Mark's Square. They are hand in hand
and each grasps a tow-headed 3- to 4-year-old by the other hand. Without skipping a beat, he lifts her hand and kisses it. I melt. Where's a hand to hold when you need one? If Paris is for lovers, Venice
is for romance. Couples from Middle America you would bet euros had not held hands, hugged or kissed in public for years,
do so. Often.

CZECH LIST PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- Sensory overload is
a perpetual hazard in Prague. Its buildings are a survey course
in architectural styles and palettes. The winter sky is gray,
the Vltava River is gray, the stomped on snow is dirty gray, but you are surrounded by the rich siennas and ochers of the
Romanesque and Gothic; the exhilarating patterns of Renaissance sgrafito; the pinks, greens, blues and yellows of the Baroque
and Rococo; the painted and gilded grace of Art Nouveau and streamlined Art Deco, the intriguing angles of Cubist, a bit of
plain Jane Bauhaus for contrast and Frank Gehry's Fred and Ginger building for whimsy.
SAMPLING OF SWITZERLAND
GRUYERE,
Switzerland -- Pick a reason. Watches, wine, cheese and chocolate. Heidi, alphorns, army knives and numbered bank accounts.
Soaring Alps and bucolic valleys, scenic lakes and jet-set ski resorts.
Switzerland has been a popular European destination since Roman soldiers marched through, looked around then returned to retire.
During the ensuing centuries, the Italians, Germans, French and English followed and, like the Romans, stuck around or returned.

Off season travel Why on earth would
two women from Florida go to Prague in the middle of January? For the same reason
that other people go to the ski slopes, Miami Beach, the Bahamas and the desert in summer. It's cheaper, there are fewer
tourists, shorter lines and more empty hotel rooms, restaurant tables and frequent-flyer-mile seats.
Off-season travel definitely has its advantages, especially for the spur-of-the-moment traveler.
