Spires and slip rock in Kodachrome State Park

Utah; Breathtaking beauty at every turn
ZION, Utah - On the right, the Watchman guards the southern entrance to Zion National Park.
On the left, the little Virgin River winds along the roadside, continuing the erosion with which it created much of this magnificent landscape.
In the land of towering buttes and Navajo sandstone, striking views high and low fill both sides of the road for miles here, there, wherever.
Prepare to suffer a severe case of neck-crick and swivel-head when driving through southwestern Utah, especially its parks.

 INSIDE ALASKA'S INSIDE PASSAGE

KETCHIKAN, Alaska -- You can fly between Juneau and Ketchikan in 30 minutes, but oh, the sights and sounds you miss.
The soul-deep crack of glaciers calving followed by the sizzling effervescence of formerly soundless water.
The whoosh of expelled air from its blowhole and the herculean efforts of a humpbacked whale to hurl itself from icy waters in a breach that sends chills down your spine.

In Las Vegas, dinner can be the show

LAS VEGAS -- In today's Las Vegas, you are as likely to spend your last dollar on a fine meal or superior wine as you are to slip it in the slots. Sophistication has hit the Strip, as have popular Broadway musicals and ''name'' restaurants.
